About the EARL

The EARL is a Structured Professional Judgment tool to assess the risk of violence in children under 12.

It was developed at the Child Development Institute in Toronto, Canada, in 1998 as part of a comprehensive crime prevention model. The instrument in now in its third revision.

The key aims of the EARL are:

  • Increase understanding of early childhood risk factors for future antisocial behaviours.

  • Offer a structure that helps practitioners to systematically identify risks in order to plan appropriate and timely treatment.

  • Improve the reliability and validity in predicting the likelihood of high‐risk children engaging in antisocial behaviors.

Training

I provide training in the EARL across Europe.

Training takes place over two full days or four half days. This is an interactive training course that mixes lecture-style information with hands-on individual and group exercises in using the EARL manual.

The training of the EARL has been designed by the authors and is provided in collaboration with the Child Development Institute.

During training, you will become proficient in conducting EARL Risk Assessments with the joint aim of identifying risks and formulating appropriate treatment plans and strategies.

Please get in contact for dates and pricing, or check out the Training tab for the next open-call training event.
